Most people think hair needs conditioning, some hydration, and maybe a good scalp scrub every once in a while.

It needs protein for strength and vitality.

Why Does Hair Need Protein?

Hair is 90% protein!

So you can imagine why it needs you to provide protein support when things are depleted from usual stressors like:

  • styling
  • sun damage
  • hormonal changes
  • genetics
  • diet (less common in protein-loss)

Your body creates its own protein called keratin (found in nails and hair).

As the structural building block of your hair, keratin is responsible for its shape and strength.

So, when you lack this precious protein, the first thing you'll notice is limp, lifeless, and weak locks.

Plus!

If meh hair days weren't enough, too little protein makes breakage and hair fall so much more frequent.

So, what about a keratin treatment?

If you've stumbled across “keratin treatments” in salons;

These are designed to fill in the gaps where protein is lacking.

They seal your hair's cuticle, making it shinier, smoother, and tameable for up to 6 months.

Sounds amazing right?

Well, there's a reason these treatments are expensive AND only performed by licensed pros.

Salon-grade protein treatments often contain toxic chemicals to get the job done.

One of them being formaldehyde!

Sure, you'll get some nice structural change to your hair…

But!

The extremely heavy chemicals that are in these treatments have negative effects on your precious scalp and hair shed.

Additionally, these are not conditioning or moisturizing treatments.

And they're often better suited for coiled, curly, or natural hair types as those require protein supplements.

So, you can put down your credit card.

Because The Sitting Pretty Hair Gym is full service and cost effective, girl.

We value protein (like, really!) but like doing the same workout every. single. day. you need a more well-rounded routine to get body-ody-ody.

Let's talk about protein moisture balance for hair.

The Protein Moisture Balance

So we know too little protein causes breakage.

But hate to tell you:

Too much protein does the same.

And the same perfect balance goes for moisture.

When you've got proper protein, along with ample moisture, hair is nourished and hydrated;

Making is strong in the face of breakage.

So, how do I know if my hair needs protein or moisture?

All hair is different (we know this).

Treatments, hair follicle shape, styling methods, all play a huge part in how hair becomes malnourished.

To test:

  1. Grab a few strands of hair
  2. Holding vertically, gently stretch the strands towards the ground
  3. And release

If your hair was really stretchy and broke, it could be too much/too little protein.

If your strands broke immediately, or seemed really weak, it could be too much moisture.

If your hair bounced back to its original shape, that's balance!

Wanna know how to balance protein and moisture in hair?

It's a hair treatment with egg, obviously!

What Are The Benefits of Egg on Hair?

Two words: hair superfood.

These nutrient-rich balls of protein have a long list of vitamins that are densely packed in those lil guys.

Egg whites give you the most protein in the egg (almost a whole gram more than the yolk).

But, the yolk contains all the hair fortifying moisture from:

  • Biotin
  • Folate
  • Vitamin A + vitamin D
  • Choline
  • And some added protein in here too

Ahem, it's a colour-coded hair treatment!

And...

Not only does the hair shaft get benefits from both components, but scalps love a treatment with egg too!

Applying eggs directly to the roots helps infuse hair follicles with much-needed vitamins and minerals.

Encouraging new hair to grow stronger and be less prone to breakage and shedding.

Recipe: Hair Treatment With Egg and Olive Oil

As always, #knowyourself.

Is your scalp dry? Do you need moisture? Or maybe protein?

Because the yolk is more moisturizing, very oily hair types should stick to just the whites on your scalp.

OR, if using the full egg, keep the treatment a couple inches down from your roots.

Why?

The fatty oils of the yolk can be too heavy for some oily types.

For normal to dry hair, a yolk is fine for scalp to end.

Ready for the nicest workout of your life?

  • Add 2 eggs to 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Massage from root to end if desired (but ends usually need this treatment most)
  • Leave on hair for at least an hour
  • Wash hair as usual, using cold water as much as possible
  • Double the recipe if you have very long hair or extra dry locks
