How To Naturally Hydrate Your Hair This Summer [Ultimate Guide]

Summer vacation is among us.

No matter where you are in the world, you're either planning your summer holidays or booking a winter escape.

While we're looking forward to sunshine, salt water and sun-kissed skin, there's one thing we're not looking forward to...

We've all seen how summer can really take its toll on our locks.

Those blissful ocean swims, dips in the pool and days in the sun have turned my hair to straw on multiple occasions.

It's not pretty.

We all know how important it is to stay hydrated in summer...

And that includes your hair!

I know packing for vacation isn't easy.

It's hard enough to narrow down what makeup and accessories to bring.

It's why I've done a hella' lot of research to bring you:

The ultimate guide to naturally hydrate your hair this summer.

I know you're probably not going to be making an avocado and honey mask for your hair mid-holiday...

So I've filtered out the unrealistic, to bring you these simple, effective ways to hydrate your hair on holidays.

With minimal products.

From the prep to the post-sun treatment, we've got you covered for:

  • how to moisturise hair naturally
  • how to hydrate hair with coconut oils and other natural oils
  • how to moisturise dry hair
  • how to moisturise curly hair

So what's the best way to keep your hair hydrated this summer?

Go natural.

So many of the hair products you see on supermarket and pharmacy shelves contain sneaky chemicals that strip your hair of moisture.

The last thing we need in summer are products that will lead to dry and damaged hair.

Although they might say the right words like 'hydrating' or 'moisturising', most products contain chemicals that can reverse the effects of any hydrating goodness.

Alternatively, concentrated, natural oils are rich in vitamins to hydrate your hair asap.

Speaking of natural...

Get a little dirty.

If you're like me and you're obsessed with the feeling of fresh, clean locks...

I'm sorry to break this to you.

The first thing you can do to hydrate your hair this summer is:

Wash your hair less.

Here's the bottom line:

The sun's heat dries out your hair.

Washing your hair strips your hair of its natural oils.

Frequent exposure to both, causes your locks to lose a lot of hydration.

Of course, you're not about to avoid the sun on vacation.

So instead, try cut back on the number of times you wash your hair.

Give your hair a chance for its natural oils to come through.

Your hair will love you for it.

You'll find that in hot, dry climates your hair naturally takes longer to get visibly oily anyway.

So you can afford a few extra days before your next wash.

You might be wondering:

'What if I'm swimming every day and need to wash the chlorine or salt water out of my hair?'

Which brings me to my next tip...

Protect your hair naturally with these super oils...

I have a love-hate relationship with beach hair.

love that the salty water can create the perfect messy waves, without frizz.

But I cringe at how dry it makes my hair!

We've all experienced the wrath of trying to brush our hair after a swim.

It's a knotty, matted mess to say the least.

Thankfully there are some amazing oils out there to moisturise your hair naturally and protect your hair from the salt and chlorine.

The best thing you can do to keep your hair hydrated in summer is use:

Coconut oil or jojoba oil.

These oils moisturise dry hair naturally, but they also create a protective layer.

Locking in hydration, while keeping out the damaging chemicals and salt.

Penetrating oils like these are particularly great for curly hair (which is naturally more dry than other hair types).

It'll enhance your curls with a silky, smooth texture.

How to hydrate your hair with coconut oil and jojoba oil:

Before swimming, squeeze a small amount of coconut oil or jojoba oil on your palm and rub it through your hair from roots to ends.

Both these oils are super concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Don't worry about making your hair so oily that it's socially unacceptable.

I'll cover how to avoid this next...

So, you've successfully avoided damaging your hair while enjoying the summer sun.

But in turn, your hair is full of oil.

Great, for hydrating purposes.

Not so great when that dreamy European guy asks you out for mojitos and you have to get date-night ready.

It's times like these that you'll want to wash your hair.

So when you do, it's important to choose the right products.

Opt for a clarifying shampoo and conditioner with ingredients that moisturise hair naturally.

Look for plant-based ingredients like grapeseed oil, argan oil, macadamia seed oil, avocado oil or shea butter.

Since you'll be washing out the coconut oil or jojoba oil, these highly moisturising ingredients will ensure your locks still get hydrated.

Avoid these ingredients:

Parabens, silicone and sulfates.

These ingredients strip away all the good stuff that keeps your hair soft, shiny and healthy.

Replace hair serum with a natural oil rinse.

Hair serums are great, but there's only so many hair products you can pack for your summer getaway.

Not to mention, hair serums aren't always so natural.

There's a great trick to naturally hydrate your hair in summer, without 101 hair products.

It gets better:

Your hair won't look greasy at all after this!

It'll just feel soft, light and moisturised.

It's seriously so simple.

All you need is at least one of the following hair penetrating oils:

  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Avocado Oil

If you're packing light, I recommend coconut oil as you'll need this oil for your pre-swim hair protection anyway.

How to do an oil rinse:

After shampoo, apply a generous amount of one (or a mixture) of those oils. Immediately after, apply conditioner.

Let this concoction sit in your hair for 3-5 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Cool water will close your hair cuticles, trapping in the moisture.

I highly recommend doing this to moisturise dry hair, it works wonders.

Other benefits of oil rinsing include detangling, eliminating frizz and smooth, shiny hair.

Bonus tip for free summer highlights:

Feeling like your hair colour is getting a little dull on vacay?

It can happen.

Swimming in chlorinated pools is risky business for anyone with highlights or bleached hair.

Lucky for you, there's a natural, easy way to maintain sunkissed hair.

All you need is lemon juice.

They say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

We say put that lemonade in your hair.

Here's the deal:

Heat from the sun actually opens up our hair cuticles.

Crazy, right?

And lemon juice naturally lifts colour.

So when you put lemon juice in your hair in summer, you're allowing the sun to naturally bleach your locks.

To be honest, it's probably a safer option than going on a whim and finding a random hairdresser away from home.
