Top 10 Updo Hairstyles, As Declared By Instagram

I'll be the first to admit I'm incredibly low key (aka: lazy) when it comes to doing my hair.

I'm in my comfort zone when my hair is down, and I usually just quickly go over the misbehaving frizzy hairs around my face with a straightener.

Then, boom. I'm ready to go.

Maybe it's the influence of all the hair stylists I follow on Instagram, or maybe it's seeing the cool hairstyles all the girls are wearing with their Sitting Pretty Halo, but lately I'm feeling a sense of styling inspiration in the air.

And this girl (me) might just be ready to do her hair up next time she hits the town.

These are some of my favourite updo hairstyles of the moment.

1. The Messy High Bun

The messy top bun takes the cake when it comes to effortless updos.

Here Rhiannon wore her Sitting Pretty Halo to add the length and volume needed to achieve this look.

Rhiannon usually has short, shoulder length hair, so she needed the help of a SP halo to easily create this look.

Once the halo is in, you pin the sides down to keep the halo in place, then collect the hair upwards and twist it into a loose bun at the top of your head.

Doing it this way will maintain a middle part in your hair so you can keep some of your fringe out, also leaving enough hair to cover the top of the halo.

Rhiannon wears the MEDIUM halo which she custom coloured when transitioning her hair from blonde to brunette.

2. The Messy Low Bun

Surprisingly, this low twisted bun is WAY less complicated than it looks.

There are two steps to creating this twisted updo hairstyle.

Step 1:

Take a section of hair from the left side of your head and twist it before pinning it across your head on the right side.

Repeat on the right side, except weave the right twisted section in behind the left section before securing it with a pin.

The two twisted sections of hair should kind of sit crossing each other.

Step 2:

Collect the remaining hair in two sections and loosely twist them into a bun.

Although it looks like it requires technique, this bun is best done when you quickly twist and throw it up without much effort or thought.

Lastly, pull some hair out gently around the front of your face to complete the look.

3. The Top Knot

The ultimate low maintenance hairdo.

I tend to lean towards this look particularly when I've been too lazy to wash my hair and need to make an appearance in public.

Since I personally prefer to wear my hair down, a half updo top knot is a happy medium.

Not to mention, a quick solution to masking dirty hair.

Unwashed hair or not, I'm all for a cute top knot paired with a basic tee and denim on the weekend.

4. The Half Up Ponytail

I've never met a half up pony I didn't like.

My fave way to do it is when you leave a wispy fringe around the front of the face.

This softens the look and gives you that 'I feel-more-comfortable-with my-hair-down' security.

Which is crucial if you're like me and tend to feel naked without some hair around your face.

When it comes to wearing this look with your Sitting Pretty Halo, it's just about positioning the halo correctly and pulling the right amount of hair back to hide the halo. Click here to watch how to create this half updo with the halo.

5. The Textured High Ponytail

When you're putting your hair in a high ponytail, the goal is to go BIG.

A whole lot of volume and length make for a luscious, perky ponytail.

To get your ponytail looking extra thick and long, you can wrap your Sitting Pretty Halo around your ponytail.

First remove the wire from the halo and attach bobby pins to the top of the halo band.

The create a small ponytail in your hair and anchor the halo around your ponytail.

Once the halo is anchored, collect the rest of the hair into the ponytail and tie with a sturdy hair tie. In fact, it's probably much more easier if you just watch how to create a ponytail with the Sitting Pretty Halo here.

    6. The Curled Mid Ponytail

I especially love this kind of wavy low pony with a high neckline, it looks super sleek.

Naturally, a Sitting Pretty Halo is going to work wonders to master this long low pony look.

You can see in the above photo how much fullness and length the halo gives to the ponytail.

Some other tips to boost volume in your pony (although you can skip these steps if you're using our halo extensions in your ponytail):

    • Spray some texturising spray on your hair before styling. (Sea salt is good)
    • Tease your pony. Most hair stylists will separate the ponytail into sections and tease the underside of each layer to add extra volume. Finish by spraying a texture spray like Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair which can act as a soft hairspray too.
    • Use a hair clip! For this you'll need a claw hair clip that's around the same width of your ponytail, so that you can hide it. Tie your hair in a ponytail, split the ponytail into top and bottom, and put the clip in between. Then tease the top half of the ponytail so it sits over the clip, hiding it. This will make your ponytail sit higher.

    7. The Twisted Half Updo

Fun fact, this look is actually Step 1 of the twisted bun.

If you're looking to change up your hair game with a simple boho look, this is a quick and easy option.

Just like before, it all it takes is twisting a piece of hair from both the left and right side of your head and then weaving them into each other before pinning.

    8. The Half Braid Ponytail

An upgrade to the ponytail if you feel like doing something a little different.

First, start by loosely braiding all your hair about midway down your head.

The key is to keep the braids soft and loose so that your hair isn't pulled back to tightly at the front.

This will allow the hair to fall gently around your face.

Once you braid to the end of your head, you can tie all your hair into a ponytail.

Then collect about a two centimetre strand of hair and wrap it around the hair tie, securing it with a pin underneath the ponytail.

leaving one strand of hair to wrap around the hair tie.

    9. The Fishtail Braid

The fishtail braid is one hairstyle that looks incredible when you've got the right amount of hair for it.

Fishtail braids are not my strong suite.

But hey, this video above (swipe left) shows you exactly how you can create a fishtail braid with the Sitting Pretty Halo.

She makes it look easy, so maybe I'll give it another go.

I feel like a fishtail braid is exactly what I want when I'm trying to cut back on heat styling.

Which I always am because heat damaged hair is not what I want.

Braids like this are great because they disguise frizzy, untamed hair without the need for heat styling.

Plus, if you sleep in this hairstyle, the next day you might wake up with cool heatless waves in your hair.

    10. The Braided Half Updo

    Saving the best til last.

This is my favourite half updo of the moment.

The key to getting your braid looking like this:

    • Use a tail comb to separate the braid section of your hair before styling. This part will separate the hair that you want around your face from the hair that will be braided. You can see in the photo above how the outside of the braid doesn't look jagged because Thanh has separated the hair to be braided before starting.
    • Keep all the strands of hair that you pull into your hair thin and even.
    • Don't braid too tightly
    • Once the braid is complete and you've secured it with a hair tie, gently tug at the braid to make it look thicker. Pulling out pieces of the braid slightly will give it that boho, relaxed vibe.
