Finally bought the Remy hair extensions you’ve been eyeing for a while? Congratulations!

You may have a lot of questions about good products for hair extensions, but we’re here to guide you through all that.

Remy hair extensions, like our halo hair extensions, are the best quality hair extensions because they’re made with human hair.

They've been carefully collected from a hair donor, put through a slow colouring process, and then put through more processes to preserve its natural texture, seal the colour, and ensure longevity.

So, while it still looks and feels like human hair (because it is), there are certain ingredients you need to avoid on Remy hair extensions. This prevents the risk of ingredients having a chemical reaction with the refined processed hair.

To save you the regret of accidentally using the wrong product, we've put together a guide on the best products for hair extensions.

A gentle shampoo and conditioner

-->
The first thing you’ll need when caring for Remy hair is a shampoo and conditioner.

As Remy hair is highly processed, it requires special treatment when washing. You can’t just use any old shampoo and conditioner.

Remy hair needs to be washed with non-toxic formulas, that have just the right amount of silicone. If you struggle to find the best shampoo and conditioner for hair extensions, the Sitting Pretty Shampoo & Conditioner are specially formulated for Remy halo hair extensions.

They’re designed to last as long as your hair extensions, are colour-safe, and contain just the right amount of silicone to protect your hair extensions.

Alternatively, avoid shampoos and conditioners that are designed for thin hair, dry hair, oily hair, or damaged hair. Make sure it’s for “normal hair” only—this is the best way to ensure there are no ingredients that could cause a chemical reaction in the hair extensions.

Lightweight hair serum

-->
Remy hair isn't designed to absorb hair care products, such as oils or serums, so don’t waste your expensive products on it.

Avoid heavy hair oils, like Argan oil or coconut oil as they can suffocate Remy hair, cause friction, and make it look bad.

However, you can still use some serums! We’ve found the Wella Professionals Oil Reflections Light Luminous Reflective Oil to be the best product for smoothing out and softening dry hair extensions.

It’s a light, thin oil that perfectly coats the hair, leaving it looking and feeling natural, smooth and lush.

If your hair extensions regularly get frizzy:

  1. Gently brush your hair extensions first with a comb or detangling brush.
  2. Blast it with some warm air from your hair dryer. This will blow away any dust that may have built up on the hair.
  3. Apply the Wella Professionals Oil Reflections Light Luminous Reflective Oil to your hand.
  4. Rub the oil in between your hands, then stroke the hair to evenly distribute the oil onto your extensions.

Hairspray (but be light with it!)

-->
Want your hair extensions to maintain its style for hours on end? You can blast it with hairspray, but only when you really need to.

Never use the hardcore hairsprays that your mum and aunties used in the ’80s, though. That stuff will destroy your hair extensions. Instead, go for the soft and gentle hair sprays on the market now.

Living Proof’s Full Dry Volume and Texture Spray not only amplifies any style your hair extensions may have, but it also gives a soft hold that never feels crunchy and provides heat protection.

Take note: Some hairsprays contain flammable solvents, so make sure your hairspray of choice isn’t flammable.

Why? You may accidentally burn your hair extensions when you try to style them.
To be extra safe, wash your hair extensions of any product build-up before using any styling tools.

Heat Protectant Spray Is A Must

-->
The best product for hair extensions is a heat protectant. Just like your natural hair, too much heat can damage your halo hair.

Remember, this is highly processed hair and isn't attached to a source of nutrients like your hair. So, the more you apply heat, the more damaged it will become over time as the soft silicone coating will eventually wear off.

To prolong its lifespan, spray your halo with a heat protectant before styling. We love the BondiBoost Heat Protect Spray for being a lightweight, non-sticky mist.

Just spritz it from the roots to the ends of your hair extensions to prevent heat damage.

Texturising Spray Is Better Than A Powder

-->
Texturising spray, or sea salt spray, is the fastest way to get waves that make your hair extensions look like it just came from a dip in the sea. We recommend Ouai’s Wave Spray to enhance your hair and your extensions’ texture and shine.

Notice we said spray and not powder? It’s because texturising powders have a tendency to build up on the hair and are often heavier.

Lightweight sprays are okay to use on The Halo, but you need to wash it out after every use. So, only use it for special occasions. Washing The Halo too often will strip it of the silicone processing that helps keep the hair fresh and soft.

Blue or purple shampoo

-->
Your Halo’s colour is safe from fading, but if you do want to boost its hue with a little blue or purple shampoo, you can totally wash it with that.

An oldie but a goodie purple shampoo is L’Oreal’s EverPure Sulfate-Free Purple Shampoo. It neutralises any yellow or brassy tones while leaving hair extensions looking brand new.

If you already have a purple or blue shampoo in your bathroom and are curious if it can be used on your Halo, send us an email or consult with your hairdresser first.

Fine-Tooth Comb

-->

Regular bristle brushes are too rough for hair extensions. It can break the strands and even make it look frizzy.

This is why The Halo always comes with a fine-tooth comb in the box—it’s the best way to comb Remy hair extensions!

It'll gently detangle your halo without causing frizziness or ripping the hair. Remember: human hair extensions are more delicate than your natural hair.

Are there hair product ingredients I should avoid using on my Halo?

Alcohol: Alcohol is a drying chemical and should absolutely be avoided as it can ruin the chemical processes of your halo hair extensions.

Sulphates: Sulphates are most commonly found in shampoo as they give your scalp that “squeaky clean” feeling. But, they’re very drying so make sure your shampoo is always sulphate-free.

Bleach: As Remy hair has already been chemically processed, bleaching the extensions will cause the hair to dry out and can potentially ruin the colour.
