The Most Nourishing Foods For Healthy Skin & Hair

I love a good hydrating hair serum or face mask as much as the next girl. But let's get back to basics. Nothing can benefit your hair and skin like a nourishing diet.

The mantra: Health first. Beauty second.

Treating your body like the temple it is will have you glowing from the inside out.

Here are some of my favourite vitamin-rich foods that tick all the boxes. They'll help you reach your daily dose of vitamins, reduce signs of ageing and give you healthier looking hair and skin.

1. Almonds

Inner health benefits: Jam-packed with magnesium. To put it in perspective, 60g of almonds contains 160mg of magnesium. That's half your daily magnesium intake.

Beauty benefits… Almonds are rich in antioxidants and Vitamin E. Think of Almonds as food for the skin. Antioxidants help kick out the toxins and free radicals from your body, leaving your skin cleansed. While Vitamin E keeps your skin nourished, smooth and glowing.

Eat it: Add a handful of almonds to oats or chia pudding for breakfast, put almond butter on your toast or chop them up and add them to a salad.

2. Spinach

Inner health benefits... High source of potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Beauty benefits… Spinach contains three anti-ageing antioxidants; Vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. We know too much exposure to UV rays ages our skin. This power trio helps protect our skin from the sun and fights against signs of ageing. Spinach has an abundance of vitamins you need to maintain skin elasticity.

Eat it: Saute spinach with eggs for breakfast, add a big handful of spinach in a smoothie or green juice, or substitute lettuce with fresh spinach in salads.

3. Avocado

Inner health benefits: Contains more potassium than a medium banana, and is a great source of fibre, magnesium and folate.

Beauty benefits… You probably didn't need another reason to eat avocados. But here you go… Avocados are full of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are responsible for regulating cell membranes. Basically, it keeps the good stuff like water and nutrients in your cells and gets rid of any waste and fats.

When our cells retain water, it prevents the appearance of ageing, cellulite and oily skin. Healthy, hydrated cells are key for healthier hair, skin and nails.

Our bodies don't actually produce essential fatty acids, so it's vital that we eat enough of them. More smashed avo on toast and extra guac for us…

Eat it: In every way, all the time… (sorry, avocado fanatic over here). Okay well besides the regulars (with eggs or on toast), you can add avo to a smoothie, make chocolate mousse with avocado for a treat, make avocado dip with chopped vegetables… the works. A shorter list would be meals that you can't incorporate avocado into.

4. Flaxseeds

Inner health benefits: Flaxseeds (also known as Linseeds) go under the radar. They're actually an amazing source of dietary fibre, minerals like manganese, thiamine and magnesium; and plant-based protein. They even contain antioxidant substances called lignans that help promote hormonal balance (yes, please).

Beauty benefits… Omega-3 fatty acids, once again. Bring on that skin cell renewal that will make our skin look more supple, moisturised, and like we're turning 21 every year.

Eat it: Flax seeds are easy to add to yoghurt, porridge or a smoothie. If you prefer flaxseed oil, it can be an easy substitute to use when cooking or made into a salad dressing.

5. Salmon

Inner health benefits: 1 fillet of salmon contains approximately ⅓ of your required daily potassium intake and over ¾ of your calcium intake. Not to mention it's a delicious source of protein.

Beauty benefits… The vitamin D, protein and omega-3 fatty acids in this fish is a recipe for hair growth. It keeps your scalp nice and healthy. Eating enough protein is especially essential for hair growth. Just like protein strengthens our muscles, it strengthens our hair follicles for luscious locks.

Eat it: Incorporate a fillet of grilled or baked salmon into your weekly meals. Accompany with a fresh salad or roast/steamed veggies for a quick and easy dinner option.
