Best Essential Oils for Scalp Massage

Rosemary

This essential oil is one of our favourites for hair growth. Using rosemary oil for hair growth has been practiced for centuries in Mediterranean cultures and for good reason: it’s one of the few that’s been scientifically proven to grow hair as well as products like Rogaine.

You’ll get thicker hair, stimulated hair growth, and denser locks from root down when using this essential oil during a scalp massage. Top tip: massage this oil in along with the the inversion method for hair growth to stimulate even more blood flow.

Geranium

This is a great essential oil for fine hair types and those with breakage-prone locks. Geranium essential helps strengthen hair at the root with its high antioxidant and flavonoid content. When you add this essential oil via scalp massage, you’re focusing these amazing benefits right into the base of your hair so its strengthening properties carry through any new growth as well.

Lavender

For when you want new hair growth plus a little antibacterial action, add lavender essential oil to your scalp massage routine! Along with its relaxing scent, this is a great overnight oil to apply to your scalp before bed as its benefits can work while you sleep.

Its antibacterial properties help fight causes of dandruff and sebum buildup, while promoting faster hair growth. We call it a triple win for scalp care.

Peppermint

Similar to how rosemary oil works for hair growth, peppermint oil promotes new growth with increased blood flow to follicles. If you’ve ever applied peppermint oil to your skin, you’ll notice it causes a cold, tingling sensation. This increases blood flow to the area, which is especially important for follicles when trying to achieve new hair growth.

Clary Sage

Clary sage essential oil is another great growth promoter for hair! It contains the same compound linalyl acetate as lavender oil so they work quite similarly for stimulated hair growth and blood flow. Another benefit of clary sage oil scalp massages are that they help strengthen hair as well, reducing breakage from the source.

Tea Tree

A classic oil used in scalp and hair care, tea tree oil is utterly amazing at curing scalp troubles! It’s antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic which means it’ll unclog scalp pores, remove scalp bacteria and sebum overproduction, while also promoting hair growth with increased blood flow at the site.

When using essential oils for scalp massages like this one, use just a couple drops in your carrier oil as it’s stronger than others. We suggest 3 drops in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Alternatively, you can add a few drops to your shampoo and massage your scalp with that while showering.

Cedarwood

If you have an oily scalp, try using cedarwood oil with your scalp massage. It helps balance the oil-producing glands found in your pores which in turn helps fight any dandruff or bacterial infections excess sebum can cause.

Using Essential Oils For Scalp Massage: Dos and Don’t

Luckily, adding essential oils into you hair care routine is relatively easy and harm-free, but it’s important to know a few do’s and don’ts to get the most out of your scalp massage.

Do:

Blend essential oils with a carrier oil. Essential oils are derived from plants that are distilled or evaporated into potent oils. This is what gives them their strong smell and efficacy, but that means their chemical composition is very strong as well, which can be harsh on skin when used in pure form.

So, when using on sensitive scalp skin, always dilute your essential oil if you’re using it as a scalp massage oil with any of these (or your favourite if not mentioned!):

Opt for high quality. As mentioned, your scalp has sensitive skin. It’s also the growth place of your hair so you want to be adding high quality ingredients here especially. We suggest buying essential oils for your scalp massage at a natural health food store as these often have different grades of products (such as organic, non GMO, etc).

As well, be sure to get essential oils that aren’t aromatherapy specific. Essential oils are used for aromatherapy, but sometimes brands create oils specially formulated for aromatherapy practices. These can be either weaker, or include more unnatural ingredients that won’t make your hair any better.

Don’t

Apply tons. Even when creating your diluted scalp massage solution, a little goes a long way with these. We suggest several drops (5-10) for every 3 tablespoons of carrier oil. For most scalps, 3-5 tablespoons is enough to work around in a scalp massage.

Rub excessively hard. Scalp massages with essential oils are meant to be super relaxing for both you and your scalp’s skin so be gentle! If you’re new to massaging, read up on how to do a scalp massage at home. You don’t need to massage for longer than 10-15 minutes, nor excessively hard.
